The comprehensive redesign and extension of a distinctive villa, constructed in the 1980s in Filothei, Athens, posed a significant architectural challenge. The original post-modern design, characterized by primary shapes, bulky edges, and sharp angles, called for a reimagining that would embody a contemporary aesthetic defined by sleek lines and minimalist elegance.
Central to the design evolution was the unification of the elevations through the introduction of expansive bands and beams that elegantly overlaid the existing building envelope. These structural elements not only formed canopies and balconies but also served to simplify the once intricate building forms, creating a harmonious visual continuity. Notably, this simplification strategy allowed for the distinctive curved/tube staircase core to emerge as a celebrated and defining architectural element.
Furthermore, the revitalization extended to the rear and front gardens, meticulously reinvented to harmonize with the demands and preferences of the new residents. Within, the interiors underwent a complete transformation, adeptly tailored to meet the contemporary needs of a modern family. The result is a masterful synthesis of past and present, where the original design's essence is preserved and elevated, offering a refined and functional living environment that seamlessly integrates architectural excellence with refined aesthetics.
