PH Townhouse

Apartment

Located in Kensington, London the minimalist townhouse is a post-war building rigidly arranged with a central staircase spine splitting the house to the front and back symmetrically. This rear extension and refurbishment of the building focused on creating light-filled spaces for functional modern living.

In order to achieve a natural transitional flow from a semi-public space to a private space, the concept of the primary axis was used. This primary axis runs through the ground floor starting at the entrance and gradually growing as the space progresses, past the staircase, dining and a dropped level sitting area to create the same level access to the garden. The axis is weighted on one side with continuous joinery that changes function with each zone.

Starting with a bench seat at the entrance where the user can pause on entry, take off their coat and shoes before moving through the house. This then develops into a bookshelf, a desk area, and further a fireplace with a hidden TV unit above. The aim here was to achieve a seamless connection or flow between the spaces in the house, in more technical words, work on the liminal spaces and make a good design, Better.
